THE OCEAN ISN’T BLUE

The Ocean Isn’t Blue is a series of large-scale photographic works depicting the Arctic ocean wrapped in soft plastics. Reflecting on the excessive consumption of single use plastic by humans, of which 8 million tonnes of it end up in the ocean. The Ocean Isn’t Blue envisions the possible future of our oceans; void of life and full of plastic.

The title of the series, The Ocean Isn’t Blue, is a reference to a scientifically proven fact where water is clear. Study shows water absorbs most of the sunlight, except for blue light due to their shorter wavelengths, which is why the ocean appears blue to the human eye. Though the ocean may seem blue, it isn’t – The Ocean Isn’t Blue speaks to our understanding of science reflecting truth and highlights the cost of denying scientific data surrounding climate change.

The Ocean Isn’t Blue (I) won the ILFORD Excellence in Photomedia Award, Centre for Contemporary Photography
